MUMBAI: Reliance Power has started producing coal at two mines attached to its 4,000megawatts ultra mega power project at Sasan, Chief Executive JP Chalasani said on Monday. Mining operations began at a time when the government is reviewing the progress of captive coal mines allocated to various companies.
The equipment being used includes giant rope shovels, dumper trucks, dozers and graders. The company will soon press into service draglines with a 61 cubicmetre bucket, which is twice the size of the largest dragline ever to be used in India, said the company statement.
The two coal blocks Moher and MoherAmlohri were allocated to Reliance Power for its 4,000 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) in Madhya Pradesh in 2007.
Longwall Miner. Twenty percent to 30 percent of mined coal underground is from longwall mining. This is performed by a mechanical cutter that shears coal off from a panel on the seam. The panel being worked on may be up to 800 feet in width and 7,000 feet in length. Mined coal is deposited onto a conveyor that moves the coal to a collection area.
Sasan Power, a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Power, is developing the Sasan Ultra Mega Power Project and three associated coal mines.
Coal from the mines will be used to generate electricity at the company's Sasan Ultra Mega Power Plant, India's largest domestic coalbased power plant. There will be annual production of 20 million tonnes from the Moher and MoherAmlohri coal mines associated with the Sasan project.
