There was nothing metal in/attached to the mill jar when it exploded that could have caused the spark. You need to realize that even if some bizarre 1in100k chain of specific circumstances occurred that resulted in the glass marbles building up a static charge, that still means that glass and ceramic media are unsafe.

First run with ceramic media.. I can not see any obvious reason for this to happen other than a spark from within, however [thankfully] I was not there when it went off. And there are other possibilities, like contamination with a stray piece of metal in the charcoal or maybe it was leaking powder, but I don't have any evidence of that.
Posted 31 July 2015 07:37 PM. Glass marbles was the cause of one explosion that I know of.. You should always baracade the mill with heavy sand bags. If it were to blow you want the stuff to go up not sideways.. But yeah pretty darn safe using proper media and rubber jar.

As far as placement of your mill, the ideal distance is probably around 150ft or more away from any buildings of any sort. If you can barricade it that's even better (things like sandbags). Just make sure you don't block off air to the motor. When making black powder there is always a chance for it to go off.

The reason your ball mill exploded is pretty simple; potassium chlorate and aluminium should not be ball milled together. If your going to say; "I done it many times before without a problem." just consider that your were lucky those times before. Potassium chlorate shouldn't be ball milled with any fuels, metals in particular.
